The premarital physical is no longer required.
Both applicants must present picture identification.
Individuals under the age of 21 must present a birth certificate.
Applicants 16 or 17 years of age must have written parental consent and certified copies of their birth certificate in order to acquire a license. Please contact the Register of Deeds office at 252-426-5660 for further information.
Both applicants must provide their Social Security cards. If they do not have their Social Security cards, they may provide a W-2 form, tax return or pay stub showing their Social Security Number. Note: An alien admitted to the United States for permanent residence or to engage in employment must be issued a Social Security number.
Applicants who are not eligible for a Social Security number may obtain a marriage license by presenting a notarized affidavit that states "I have not been issued a social security number
by the US government and I am not eligible to obtain one." The affidavit is available in the Register of Deeds office.
Copy of final divorce judgment or death certificate, if it has been less than a year is required. There is no waiting period between the divorce and applying for the new license.
The license is good immediately upon issuance and is valid for 60 days.
The fee for the license is $60.00. Cash, Check or Credit/Debit Card is accepted as payment.
Marriage licenses are issued between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding Holidays. Perquimans County Courthouse, 128 N. Church St. Hertford, NC 27944.
If you plan to be married by the magistrate after obtaining a license, please call 252-404-5019 for information regarding the office hours and other information regarding the ceremony and fees.
If you need a copy of your marriage license, you may acquire it at our office in person or you may request it by mail at P. O. Box 74, Hertford, NC 27944. Please be sure to sign your request.
